Abstract

Textile wastewater is characterized by high levels of synthetic dyes, persistent organic compounds, and heavy metals that can considerably harm ecosystems and human health if inadequately treated. Traditional coagulation-flocculation techniques frequently employ synthetic polymers like polyacrylamide, which are effective but produce significant amounts of hazardous sludge, potentially harming soil quality and raising long-term toxicity concerns. On the other hand, jute (Corchorus capsularis L.), a plant commonly grown in Vietnam, is often underutilized, particularly its post-harvest biomass. The leaves and stems of jute are rich in mucilaginous polysaccharides that exhibit promising qualities as flocculant aids. The extract is produced through mechanical grinding, heating, filtration, and centrifugation, and can be used directly as a coagulant aid. The coagulation process was conducted using a Jartest apparatus, with Al2(SO4)3 serving as the main coagulant and the jute extract acting as a coagulant aid. Experimental findings indicated that under optimal conditions (pH 7.0, Al2(SO4)3 75.0 mg/L, jute extract 15.0 mg/L), removal efficiencies reached 89.0% for color, 89.3% for turbidity, and 62.0% for COD. This study highlights the potential of jute-derived extract as an economical, eco-friendly biopolymer coagulant aid for textile wastewater treatment, aligning with circular economy principles and sustainable water management.
