Thủy canh là phương pháp trồng cây theo công nghệ mới không dùng đất và sử dụng dinh dưỡng hòa tan trong nước. Phương pháp này cho năng suất cao và đảm bảo an toàn thực phẩm, hướng tới một nền nông nghiệp bền vững. Bên cạnh đó, lục bình là loài thủy sinh xâm lấn mạnh gây ra nhiều ảnh hưởng đến kinh tế, xã hội và môi trường. Ủ phân hữu cơ lục bình được xác định là một trong những phương pháp dễ thực hiện và thân thiện với môi trường nhằm mục đích chuyển chất dinh dưỡng cho chu kỳ phát triển của cây trồng. Nghiên cứu này đã kết hợp phương pháp trồng thủy canh một số loài thực vật, bao gồm xà lách Lactuca sativa, cải ngọt Brassica integrifolia và cà chua Solanum lycopersicum trên giá thể hữu cơ lục bình Eichhornia crassipes kết hợp với xơ dừa tại các tỷ lệ phối trộn khác nhau. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy giá thể lục bình phối trộn với xơ dừa có tác dụng thúc đẩy sự sinh trưởng và năng suất của cây xà lách, cải ngọt và cà chua thủy canh. Cụ thể, tỷ lệ phối trộn để tạo giá thể giữa lục bình và xơ dừa theo tỷ lệ 50:50 là phù hợp nhất để trồng xà lách, cải ngọt trên hệ thống thủy canh hồi lưu với khối lượng và chiều dài rễ tăng. Trong khi đó, tỷ lệ phối trộn giữa lục bình và xơ dừa ở tỷ lệ 75:25 là phù hợp nhất để trồng cà chua với tỷ lệ nảy mầm, số lượng hoa, tỷ lệ đậu quả tăng và rút ngắn thời gian ra hoa, từ đó làm tăng năng suất cà chua. Bên cạnh đó, hàm lượng nitrat xác định được trong tất cả các mẫu thu được đều đạt tiêu chuẩn an toàn thực phẩm rau quả tươi [QCVN 01-132:2013/BNNPTNT]. Đặc biệt, hàm lượng một số kim loại nặng, bao gồm chì, thủy ngân, asen và cadimi đều không được phát hiện trong các mẫu rau, quả. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra việc tận dụng lục bình kết hợp với xơ dừa làm giá thể trồng thủy canh một số loài rau, quả đã giúp giải quyết được vấn đề chất thải lục bình phát sinh với khối lượng lớn, xử lý tốn kém để tạo ra một loại giá thể phù hợp, thân thiện môi trường cho việc phát triển nông nghiệp thủy canh bền vững và tính khả thi cao trong ứng dụng trên quy mô lớn.
