Abstract

Montmorillonite-starch is synthesized by modifying montmorillonite with starch to facilitate the adsorption of Pb (II) and Cd (II) ions in water. The structure and properties of this material are characterized using techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The adsorption process for these ions is investigated through Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) on the above two ions through influencing factors including: pH and adsorbent dosage. The adsorption process is better described by the second-order kinetic equation and the Langmuir isotherm model than by the first-order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption capacities for Pb (II) and Cd (II) ions in water are 23.8 mg/g and 5.4 mg/g, respectively, at equilibrium.
