Abstract

In recent years, the complexity of power grid systems has increased due to the increasing penetration of renewable energy and distributed generation sources. Increasing complexity requires new methods to quickly manage changing sources and loads. This article presents the basics of bidirectional AC-AC power electronics converters called semiconductor transformers. Semiconductor transformers typically consist of three main conversion stages AC-DC, DC-DC, and DC-AC; at the heart of which is a high-power DC-DC converter, operating at high frequencies to significantly reduce the size, overall mass, and cost of the converter.
