The global tourism industry is undergoing a structural shift from experience-based consumption toward transformation-oriented travel, where value is derived from lasting personal change rather than temporary satisfaction. Positioned at the intersection of transformative learning theory, positive psychology, and the emerging transformation economy, transformative tourism emphasizes deep engagement with self, culture, and nature as a catalyst for enduring psychological and behavioral change. This study aims to clarify the theoretical foundations of transformative tourism, examine how transformative mechanisms are operationalized across international case studies, and propose a strategic framework for Vietnam. A qualitative multi-method approach is employed, combining literature review and comparative case analysis of six destinations: Bhutan, Bali, Peru, Iceland, Japan, and Costa Rica. The findings identify four recurring dimensions that enable transformation: structured challenge, guided meaning-making, mindful disconnection, and regenerative engagement. These dimensions are then translated into a four-pillar strategic framework tailored to Vietnam, including depth-oriented experiential design, culturally embedded facilitation, mindful environment planning, and regenerative community participation. The study contributes to the literature by synthesizing fragmented concepts into an integrated framework and offers practical implications for policy and destination management. However, the proposed model remains conceptual and requires further empirical validation.
